DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The Danish shipping company, Maersk, announced on Tuesday the complete suspension of shipping operations to and from Syria due to sanctions imposed on Syria.
Maersk, one of the largest shipping companies in the world, stated that “after careful consideration and a thorough evaluation of available options, we have decided to formally wind down our operations in Syria.”
The company’s statement said that due to “Syria being a highly sanctioned country, business activity has already been very restricted.”
The statement added, “Maersk has therefore conducted limited operations in Syria in full compliance with international sanctions.”
The company noted that maintaining operations has “recently become even more challenging logistically, and we have therefore made the decision to close our operations down completely.”
The company’s operations will cease completely from Dec. 1, 2023. The company’s last ship to connect with Syria will be the Maersk Narmada (346E/347W) on Nov. 28, the statement said.
