Iraqi woman killed by Turkish border guards in northwest Syria
IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – An Iraqi woman in her thirties was killed and a young Syrian man was injured on Sunday after Turkish border guards opened fire on them while attempting to cross the border into Turkish territory from northwestern Syria.
A local source informed North Press, “The border guards stationed at the observation tower against the village of Khirbat al-Jouz opened fire on a group of people as they approached the border wall at the village.”
The source added that the shooting resulted in the killing of an Iraqi woman named Rabia Mshari al-Jabr from the Jubur tribe and the injury of a young Syrian man named Burhan al-Ejel.
The source said that they were transported by locals to the Salqin Hospital in western Idlib, where the Iraqi woman died immediately, while the injured person remained in the ICU to receive treatment.
In June, there were six incidents of civilians being targeted while crossing the Turkish border in the western countryside of Idlib, either from Azmarin or Khirbat al-Jouz. Despite the risks, Syrians are still attempting to cross the border, hoping for a better future amidst a worsening economic situation, among other challenges.
