Kobani celebrates 10th anniversary of liberation from ISIS
KOBANI, Syria (North Press) – The Autonomous Administration of Kobani in northern Syria organized on Sunday a celebration marking the 10th anniversary of the city’s liberation from the Islamic State (ISIS).
The event, held in the Old Municipality Square (Martyr Agid Square) in the city center, saw participation from delegations representing the French and Italian parliaments, as well as a British delegation.
Farhan Haj Issa, Co-chair of the AANES’ Executive Council in Kobani, emphasized during the celebration that while the city commemorates its historic victory over ISIS, it continues to face threats and bombardment from Turkey and its allied factions.
“Kobani defended humanity against terrorism with its historic resistance,” Haj Issa told North Press.
He added that while residents had hoped for peace and stability following the defeat of ISIS in 2015, Turkish forces and their affiliated factions have persisted in targeting the region since 2018, undermining those aspirations.
Haj Issa stated that these factions aim to keep Kobani, a symbol of humanity, resistance, and coexistence, in a constant state of conflict and war.
“Turkish aggression, including the targeting of infrastructure and essential services, has left Kobani without water, electricity, and basic necessities for life,” he noted.
Haj Issa also expressed disappointment over the lack of positive change in Syria after Dec. 8, 2024, calling out Turkey and its affiliated factions for continuing their campaigns of violence and intimidation.
He urged the international community, particularly members of the U.S.-led Global Coalition and human rights organizations, to take a stand against Turkey’s ongoing attacks on the region.
On Jan. 26, 2015, fighters of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) in Kobani succeeded in expelling ISIS following months of fierce battles as the extremist group attempted to seize the city.
