Syriac Union Party commemorates Sayfo massacres in Hasakah city
HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – On Thursday, the Syriac Union Party commemorated in Hasakah city, northeast Syria, the Sayfo massacres, also known as the Assyrian genocide, committed against Syriac and Assyrian people by the Turkish state in 1915.
The commemoration, which took place at the Syriac Cultural Association in al-Nasrah neighborhood in Hasakah city, included speeches, poetry readings, social activities and a march from there to the memorial monument of the Sayfo Martyrs in the same neighborhood.
Political figures and representatives of political parties in the region participated in the event.
Ibrahim Qas Ibrahim, a member of the Syriac Union Party, told North Press that the genocide’s “martyrs were remembered,” adding the event included a symposium on the atrocities that took place in 1915.
“Elders, children, youth and women, we all walked towards the memorial monument of the Syriac and Assyrian Sayfo massacre martyrs. We also lit candles for the victims’ souls, raising a slogan that we do not want revenge, but we want recognition [of the genocide],” he said.
On Wednesday, Syriac parties and Assyrian organizations marched in the streets of Qamishli city, northeast Syria, to demand recognition of the Sayfo massacres.
