Syrian Negotiation Committee stresses application of UN Res 2254
IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – On Sunday, the High Negotiation Committee of the Syrian opposition issued a statement about what was discussed during its periodic meeting held on May 3-4 in Geneva.
On Saturday, the HNC held its first meeting in Geneva since 2019, with several of the committee’s bodies in attendance.
The statement emphasized the full and strict implementation of the UN Security Council Resolution 2254 leading to a real political transition. The statement appreciated efforts that seek to achieve a sustainable political solution which support a pluralistic democratic state in which power is transferred peacefully, freedom of expression is respected, and the rights of all Syrians are preserved.
The body, which has 36 members, consists of six blocs, each of which has a certain number of representatives.
“Trusting the regime prematurely by readmitting it to the Arab League before complying with international agreements gives it the impression that it can obtain free gains without doing anything in return,” the statement said.
The statement stressed the necessity of increasing efforts to facilitate the voluntary and safe return of Syrian refugees to their homeland.
The issue of detainees and forcibly disappeared people was present during the meeting, and the statement said that it is the basis of any humanitarian process in line with the US Resolution 2254.
