US mediates to reopen border crossing between KRI, NE Syria
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Two sources told North Press on Thursday that the US is mediating to reopen Semalka-Faysh Kahbur border crossing hours after the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) closed it.
Earlier on Thursday, The management of the Faysh Kahbur sent a notice to the NGOs informing them that the crossing was closed until further notice, without revealing the reasons of the closure.
The Semalka-Faysh Kahbur border crossing links the areas of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) with those of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI).
A Kurdish source said that an American mediator was discussing the crossing issue with both the KRI and the AANES and informed the latter with outcomes of the meeting with officials from the KRI, revealing no more details.
An American source told North Press under condition of anonymity that “the US has been working hard since a while to facilitate crossing measures” through the crossing.
The last time where the crossing was closed was on December 16, 2021, to be resumed on January 23, 2022.
