Once again, Turkey cuts off water to Hasakah city
HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – On Tuesday, Turkey halted, once again, pumping operations at the Alouk water pumping station which is the main source of water for the city of Hasakah and its surroundings in northeast Syria.
Turkey, and its affiliated opposition factions of the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA), cut off water under the pretext of doing maintenance at the station, which is located in the countryside of Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain), north of Hasakah.
On April 19, Turkey resumed pumping operations after a six-month hiatus; it lasted for about two weeks.
Nawar Sabri, co-chair of the Water Directorate of Hasakah, affiliated with the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), told North Press, “On Monday evening, water supplies from Alouk station to Hasakah were cut off.”
“There is a fracture in the main line, and the electricity feeding it was cut off at the request of the UNICEF,” she added, without revealing further details.
She pointed out that only part of the station is operated, adding that there are repeated attacks on the water line in the Turkish-occupied areas in Sere Kaniye.
UNICEF had intervened in order to solve the water crisis in Hasakah, and had contacted the Turkish side to solve the problem. Turkey agreed to supply water in exchange for the AANES to provide electricity to the Turkish-occupied areas in northern Hasakah.
