EU punishes 9 people, 3 entities for gender-based violence
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – A day after International Women’s Day on March 8, European Council issued a decree to sanction nine individuals and three entities for their involvement in sexual and gender-based violence.
In a press release on Tuesday, the council announced sanctioning the individuals and entities to reaffirm “the EU’s determination to promote and protect human rights around the world.”
Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, said, “Ahead of the International Women’s Day, we move from words to action.”
The targeted persons and entities are two acting Taliban ministers for Higher Education and for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, officers of the Moscow Police Station, high-ranking members of the Russian armed forces, commanders of the South Sudanese militias, the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs in Myanmar/Burma.
The decision also targets the Qarchak Prison in Iran, the Syrian Republican Guard, and the Office of the Chief of Military Security Affairs in Myanmar/Burma.
Borrell added that the council’s decision enhances efforts to combat such kind of violence to make sure that “those responsible are fully accountable for their actions,” stressing the EU commitment to ending “all forms of violence against women.”
Those targeted will be subject to an “asset freeze” and a “travel ban” in and to the EU, additionally, persons and entities in the EU will be prohibited from making funds available to those targeted.
