US army general visits Syria, assesses anti-ISIS mission
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Saturday, the top US general made an unexpected visit to a US base in Syria to evaluate the mission against the Islamic State (ISIS) and review protection measures for US troops from attacks done by the extremist group.
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark A Milley told reporters traveling with him that he believed US soldiers and their Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) partners were making advances regarding inflicting an enduring defeat on ISIS.
Responding to a question whether their mission in Syria worth the risk, Milley said the security of the US and its allies is contingent on the mission of the US-led Global Coalition in Syria against ISIS. “If you think that that’s important, then the answer is Yes.”
On Thursday, the US-led Coalition announced the SDF detained on February 17 an ISIS financial operative in Hasakah, northeast Syria, who had been providing “lethal” assistance to the radical group.
