Work begins to remove debris from collapsed buildings in Aleppo
ALEPPO, Syria (North Press) – The Aleppo City Council, the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces, and other supporting teams continue to remove the rubble of buildings destroyed by the earthquake that struck the country last Monday.
A source from the Aleppo City Council told North Press on Sunday that the rescue teams and construction vehicles of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces “are currently working to remove the rubble in the eastern neighborhoods, especially Maysaloun, al-Firdos, and al-Salihin.”
On Saturday night, the search for survivors in Aleppo came to an end, but the Syrian government did not announce the numbers of those rescued.
On Friday, February 10, the government declared the governorates of Aleppo, Latakia, Hama and Idlib disaster areas, following the earthquake on February 6.
The source said that work is ongoing “to remove the debris of the collapsed buildings, which amounted to 60, and the 32 buildings which were demolished after classifying them as at ‘high risk’.”
He stated that Algerian assistance teams completed the removal of rubble in the al-Masharqa neighborhood. “Today, they entered the Bustan al-Qasr neighborhood to inspect high-risk buildings and work on their removal.”
According to the specialized committees that are tasked with inspecting damaged buildings in Aleppo, about 2.000 buildings will be surveyed, and those at high risk of collapse will be demolished.
On Saturday, the council demolished a four-story building containing 16 apartments and a basement in the Bustan al-Zahra neighborhood after noticing cracks in its foundation, according to a source within the Public Safety Committee.
