New Mild Aftershocks Felt Across Syria
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – On Wednesday evening, the people of Syria were panicked and terrified after mild aftershocks that lasted for seconds.
Local sources in Damascus said that the people of the city of Nabk in Rif Dimashq Governorate felt a mild aftershock at 10:30 pm.
At dawn on Feb. 6, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Syria and Turkey, killing thousands and injuring much more. The earthquake also caused immense destruction of buildings, trapping thousands under the rubble.
The source added that the aftershock that lasted a few seconds caused cracks in several buildings in Eastern Ghouta, which were already damaged from previous battles in recent years.
Some families left their houses and spent the night in their cars, afraid of a potential collapse of buildings, the sources noted.
Meanwhile, the people of Aleppo felt a new aftershock at 06:00 pm that urged them to leave their houses and stay in mosques, parks, and public areas.
The Syrian government’s National Earthquake Center said on Wednesday that they registered a 4.3-magnitude earthquake 6 km deep at 09:58 pm local time near the Syrian-Lebanese borders.
On Wednesday evening, a four-story building collapsed in the city of Harasta. The Governor of Rif Dimashq Safwan Abu Sadaa told the pro-government al-Watan newspaper that the building was one of the at-risk buildings and was unfit for housing and had collapsed due to aftershocks.
People in Homs, Qamishli, Idlib, the town of Jindires in Afrin countryside, and Kobani felt aftershocks as well.
The death toll for the earthquake that struck Syria on Feb. 6 has risen to more than 3.583 people and more than 6.342 injured in a provisional count.
