Earthquake kills dozens in Syria’s Idlib
IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – On Monday, dozens of people lost their lives in the Idlib Governorate, northwest Syria, when they were buried underneath collapsing buildings in the aftermath of an earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria.
Sources on the ground told North Press that the earthquake destroyed an entire neighborhood in the town of Sarmada, the city of Dana, and the entrance of the town of Termanin, north of Idlib.
In addition, dozens of buildings collapsed in the towns of Harem, Salqin, Malas, Armanaz, Atarib, and Atmeh, in Idlib countryside, according to the source.
Rescue teams and residents of the aforementioned neighborhoods are unable to save those who are still stuck underneath rubbles, the source added.
Hospitals in the Idlib region are crowded with those killed or injured in the earthquake, while the fate of hundreds is still unknown, the source said.
A medical source of the Salvation Government, affiliated with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS, formerly al-Nusra Front), said that it is too early to talk about the toll of the number of deaths and injury cases, as there are dozens of people trapped under the rubble.
The medical sector is unable to deal with the “catastrophic scope” of the earthquake, he added.
The approximate number of deaths is 60; injuries have exceeded one hundred, the source added.
