Repatriating Iraqis from Hawl Camp to be resumed soon

ERBIL, KRI, Iraq (North Press) – The Repatriation process of Iraqis from Hawl camp in northeastern Syria will be resumed in the near future, the Iraqi Ministry of Migration and Displacement told North Press on Saturday.

“The repatriation process of the Iraqis from Hawl Camp will soon resume, as they will head to the psychological rehabilitation center in al-Jada’a,” the spokesperson for the Iraqi Ministry of Migration and Displacement Ali Abbas Jahangir stated to official media outlets.

Al-Jada’a camp, located in Nineveh Governorate adjacent to the Syrian border, is a rehabilitation center for Iraqi families coming back from Hawl Camp, before being sent to their areas of origin, after completing security measures, according to a government plan.

The Iraqi official said that the ministry has completed all preparations to receive the Iraqis coming from Hawl Camp very soon.

In October 2022, Iraq’s Ministry told North Press that the total number of Iraqi families returning from Hawl Camp in northeastern Syria reached 948 families.

Every Iraqi returning from Hawl is subjected to security checks, as Iraq has formed a security committee that meets the families in the camps one by one, and then transfers them to their areas.

Hawl Camp, 45 km east of the city of Hasakah, is a house for 55.829 individuals, including 28.725 Iraqis, 18.850 Syrians, and 8.254 foreign nationalities, according to the latest statistics obtained by North Press.

The camp witnesses murders with different methods, most notably firearms. The management of the camp fears that the latest Turkish threats of invading areas in northern Syria would pave the way for ISIS to reorganize its ranks; North Press cited a statement by the management as saying.

Two-thirds of the residents of the camp, which is considered one of the most dangerous camps in the world, are Iraqi nationals, in addition to foreign families and children from different nationalities; their total number is about 50.000 people.
