8 Iraqi policemen killed in blast in Iraq’s Kirkuk
ERBIL, KRI, Iraq (North Press) – At least eight members of the Iraqi police were killed on Sunday in an IED explosion south of Kirkuk Governorate in the north of Iraq.
A security source told North Press that an IED exploded on a rural road in the vicinity of al-Hawija district, south of Kirkuk, while a security convoy of the Federal Police was passing by.
At least eight policemen, including an officer, were killed in the explosion, the source added.
It is believed that the sleeper cells of the Islamic State Organization (ISIS) were behind the explosion, as clashes ensued between the police forces and unknown gunmen, the source noted.
Iraqi media reported that at least ten people, most of them policemen, were killed in the explosion, and one of the attackers, who was suspected to be an ISIS member, was also killed during the clashes.
The security forces headed to the area and started to conduct combing operations.
