Israel claims airstrike against weapon shipment in Syria
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The head of Israel’s armed forces Lieutenant-General Aviv Kohavi claimed on Wednesday responsibility for a recent airstrike on a convoy that had entered Syria from Iraq, saying the target was a truck carrying weaponry.
The Lieutenant-General said the strike happened “several weeks ago” in what appeared to be allusion to a November 8 attack that Iraqi officials at the time said destroyed two fuel trucks.
He praised the Israeli intelligence, saying the strike would not have been possible without their help. “We could have not known that out of 25 trucks, that was the truck. Truck No. 8 is the truck with the weapons,” Kochavi told a conference at a university north of Tel Aviv.
Iraqi officials said that the November 8 attack was carried out by a drone.
It is a rarity for Israeli leaders to acknowledge an attack that took place outside of the border.
Israel has repeatedly hit Iranian targets in Syria, including weapons’ depots and military posts, to foil Iran’s attempts to smuggle weapon to ally Hezbollah and to cripple the Islamic country’s activity in the war-torn country.
