HASAKAH, Syria ( North Press) – Internal Security Forces of North and East Syria (Asayish) aborted on Tuesday at night an attack by a sleeper cell of the Islamic State Organization (ISIS) in Hawl Camp east of Hasakah, northeast Syria.
An exclusive source told North Press that the ISIS sleeper cell was positioned close to the village of Ghezela northeast of the town of Hawl which was besieged by Special Units of the Asayish.
The cell was made up of 10 militants, riding motor cycles and cars, according to the source.
Clashes erupted between the two parties nearby the checkpoint of Ghezela, resulting in the killing of an ISIS militant and injury and capturing of others.
The wounded were hospitalized, according to the source who affirmed an agent of the cell blew himself up during the clashes and that a car loaded with weapons and ammunition exploded, wounding an Asayish member.
In the aftermath, sweeping operations have been carried out by the Asayish in the area and its surrounding.
On September 17, the Asayish announced Operation Humanity and Security to pursue ISIS sleeper cells in Hawl Camp finished, arresting 226 individuals, including 36 “radical” women, suspected of belonging to ISIS.
The Asayish found 25 trenches, three AK-47 weapons, an RPG with its loading, two pistols, 25 grenades, 25 kg of explosive materials, 11 silencers, 388 bullets, 10 weapon magazines and nine military sleeves.
On August 25, Asayish announced launching the second phase of Operation “Humanity and Security” in Hawl Camp to pursue the sleeper cells of Islamic State Organization (ISIS).
The first phase was launched in 2021 in response to calls of community and tribal leaders in Hawl countryside to reduce crimes at the camp.
Hawl Camp, located 45 kilometers east of Hasakah, houses around 55.829 people, including 28.725 Iraqis, 18.850 internally displaced Syrians, and 8.254 foreign nationals, according to the latest official statistics obtained by North Press.
