Iraq assesses coordination with Syria to secure common border
ERBIL, KRI, Iraq (North Press)- On Monday, Joint Iraqi Operations Command assessed a meeting held between Iraqi Border Guard Command and that of the Syrian part on Monday in which they stressed the need for coordination to secure the 600 km common border.
Lieutenant-General Hamid al-Husseini, commander of the Iraqi Border Guard Forces, hold a meeting with his Syrian counterpart, Commander Major General Ghassan Mahmoud.
The meeting was held to discuss securing and strengthening co-operation to prevent any terrorist attempt to tamper with security, and continuing the fortification operations accomplished by the Border Guard Command on the Iraqi side, according to al-Husseini.
The spokesman for the Joint Iraqi Operations Command Major General Tahsin al-Khafaji said, in a press statement, that the meeting was “important”, and responsibilities and joint work were discussed.
Additionally, information was exchanged to control the borders and prevent any violations and smuggling operations.
The meeting discussed the procedures and abilities, especially what Iraq has done in controlling the border by establishing a barrier, barbed wire and watchtowers, according to al-Khafaji.
The meeting was hold at the headquarters of Iraq’s Border Guards.
Al-Khafaji said, “They discussed joint coordination, exchange of information, and the issue of pursuing Islamic State Organization (ISIS).”
He pointed out that “Iraq, in coordination with Syria, was able to completely secure and control the borders and prevent smuggling.”
