Syrian, Iraqi border guards hold security meeting

ERBIL, KRI, Iraq (North Press) – Iraqi border guards hold on Monday a meeting with their Syrian counterparts to enable the security of the border between the two countries.

Lieutenant-General Hamid al-Husseini, commander of the Border Guard Forces, said that his counterpart, commander of the Syrian Border Guards, Major General Ghassan Mahmoud and the accompanying delegation visited the headquarters of the Iraqi Border Guards.

A meeting was held between the two parties to discuss securing the common borders and intensifying cooperation to prevent any “security breach”.

They also discussed the continuation of the fortification operations carried out by the Border Guard Command on the Iraqi side, according to al-Husseini.

Baghdad pays great attention to the borders with Syria due to their danger, especially with the growth of ISIS activity during the previous periods.

The length of the Syrian-Iraqi border exceeds 600 km. it starts from the Rukban area on the Jordanian border in the south to the Faysh Khabur town near the Turkish border in the north. The northern half of the border is under the control of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF)

Al-Husseini said, “The Iraqi borders are safe and stable after the completion of an integrated monitoring system.”

The system includes anti-fences, concrete walls, and thermal monitoring cameras 24 hour.

Al-Husseini stressed the continued efforts to secure the borders and prevent any smuggling between the two countries.
