Suspected cholera cases in Deir ez-Zor reach 300

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – Suspected cases of cholera reached 300 in hospitals and health centers, Deir ez-Zor Civil Council announced on Thursday.

Recently, the number of infected people with cholera has significantly increased, said Muhammad al-Salem, co-chair of the Health Committee in the Deir ez-Zor Civil Council of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES).

On September 13, the Health Committee in Deir ez-Zor announced the recording of 184 infections and three deaths.

Al-Salem told North Press, “The confirmed cases after conducting the tests reached 34, and four deaths were recorded until Thursday.”

He added that the numbers of those come to the hospitals and dispensaries to make tests reached 300.

On September 13, Maryam al-Awad, co-chair of the Health Committee in the Deir ez-Zor Civil Council told North Press, “Cholera has immensely spread in the western countryside of Deir ez-Zor as a result of water contamination.”   

She called on world organizations and NGOs running health sector to provide the Health Committee with medicines especially chlorine to curb the pandemic. 

On September 10, the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) recorded 24 cholera cases and three deaths in Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor. 

On Thursday, the Environmental Affairs Bureau of Raqqa Civil Council warned locals against the direct use of the Euphrates water, saying it is contaminated with germs and bacteria.
