Unknown gunmen target government military patrol in Syria’s Daraa
DARAA, Syria (North Press) –Unknown gunmen targeted on Friday evening a military patrol of the Syrian government forces in Daraa Governorate, south Syria.
A local source told North Press the military patrol, affiliated with the government security forces, was attacked by unknown gunmen in Bosra Square in the center of Daraa with machineguns.
The source added that the government forces retaliated to the attack, resulting in fire exchange.
No casualties were reported, according to the source.
The security forces patrol has been stationed in Bosra Square for years.
Bosra is a vital area that separates between the areas the used to be under the control of the armed Syrian opposition factions and those of the government forces, the source added.
Since the government forces re-captured Daraa in 2018, the governorate has been living in a state of insecurity, with one or two daily assassinations targeting soldiers and officers of the government forces, not to mention the spread of thefts.
On August 3, an armed attack killed two soldiers of the government forces and wounded an officer and another soldier north of Daraa.
On August 2, a leader of an armed group affiliated with Air Force Intelligence branch of the government forces was killed by unidentified gunmen in the town of al-Naima, in the eastern countryside of Daraa.
In 2021, Daraa Governorate went through an 80-day-seige. After that, a number of Daraa’s notables and government forces, with mediation of Russian officers, reached a ceasefire agreement on September 5, 2021, including handing over weapons and deploying governmental security posts in the towns of the governorate.
