Unidentified gunmen target government forces leader in Syria’s Daraa

DARAA, Syria (North Press) – A leader of an armed group affiliated with Syrian government forces was killed on Tuesday by unidentified gunmen in the eastern countryside of Daraa Governorate, southern Syria.

A local source told North Press that Hossam Daifallah al-Aboud, a leader of an armed group affiliated with Air Force Intelligence branch of the government forces was killed by unidentified gunmen in the town of al-Naima, in the eastern countryside of Daraa.

Al-Aboud used to be a former member of Syrian opposition, but he and his group joined the government forces after they obtained settlement cards in 2018, the source added.

In 2021, Daraa Governorate went through an 80-day-seige. After that, a number of Daraa’s notables and government forces, with mediation of Russian officers, reached a ceasefire agreement on September 5, 2021, including handing over weapons and deploying governmental security posts in the towns of the governorate.

Since the government forces re-captured Daraa in 2018, the governorate has been living in a state of insecurity, with one or two daily assassinations targeting soldiers and officers of the government forces, not to mention the spread of thefts.

Al-Aboud was in a direct relationship with Muhammad Hilweh, a warrant officer nicknamed Abu Wael Jawiyyia and primarily responsible for coordinating with groups working for the Air Force Intelligence branch in Daraa governorate, the source stressed.
