Government forces send military reinforcements to Syria’s Daraa

DARAA, Syria (North Press) – Syrian government forces sent on Sunday new military reinforcements to the vicinity of the town of Jassem in the northern countryside of Daraa Governorate, south Syria.

This came after about a week of tightening the screw on residents and preventing them from getting to their farms.

A local source told North Press that the military reinforcements included military vehicles, more than 100 soldiers and several tanks.

The reinforcements were deployed on a military road, Muzayraa area, northwest of Jassem, Umm Tera’ area in the south, in addition to setting temporary military posts and checkpoints, the source added.

The new reinforcements are affiliated to the 15th Brigade of the 5th Division which is stationed east of the town of Inkhil in the northern countryside of Daraa, according to the source.

On August 31, dozens of Syrian government soldiers deployed in the vicinity of Jassem, preventing farmers, who were there, from leaving their agricultural projects.

On September 1, Syrian government forces sent new military reinforcements, including more than 300 soldiers, BMP-3 vehicles, AZP S-60 anti-aircraft guns, a tank and a BMB vehicle to the vicinity of Jassem in the northern countryside of Daraa Governorate, south of Syria.

Residents fear that these moves precede a siege on the city, with the aim of launching a military operation similar to that witnessed by the town of Tafas, in the western countryside of Daraa weeks ago.

Since the beginning of the siege that started on August 31, prices of a number of goods have increased, due to the merchants’ fear of leaving the city and passing through the new military checkpoints.

Since the government forces re-captured Daraa in line with 2018 agreement, the governorate has been living in a state of security chaos, with one or two daily assassinations targeting soldiers and officers of the government forces, civilians and former opposition members, not to mention the spread of thefts.

In 2021, Daraa Governorate went through an 80-day-seige. After that, a number of Daraa’s notables and government forces, with mediation of Russian officers, reached a ceasefire agreement on September 5, 2021, including handing over weapons and deploying governmental security posts in the towns of the governorate.
