Fire turns Yezidi IDPs’ tents into ashes in KRI
ERBIL, KRI, Iraq (North Press) – Yezidi families in a camp in Duhok Governorate in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) woke up on Saturday to a fire incident that burnt at least 12 tents, causing material damages.
An eyewitness inside the camp of Bajed Kandala Camp told North Press that the fire broke out on Saturday morning and extended, turning at least 12 tents into ashes.
The camp contains about 10.000 Yezidi IDPs, who have been residing in the camp since the Islamic State Organization (ISIS) attack on Shingal district (Sinjar), west of Nineveh Governorate, in the summer of 2014.
Photographs and videos showed clouds of black smoke rising over the camp, and dozens of people rushing to the fire site.
The eyewitness said that there were no human casualties, but the incident resulted in serious material damage.
Properties of about 20 families were burnt, considering that each tent houses two families.
The source indicated that the Internal Security Forces rushed to the place of the incident to control the fire, which was often caused by a “short circuit.”.
Investigations and assessing procedures of losses are continuing, according to the same source
