Syria’s AANES renews calls for no-fly zone

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) in Jazira region renewed on Thursday calls for a no-fly zone in northeast Syria

This came in a statement, through which the administration highlighted that the Turkish aggressive actions aim primarily at destabilizing security and stability and emptying the region of its original inhabitants by forcing them to flee.

The AANES added, “All recent Turkish practices indicate that it [Turkey] wants to occupy new Syrian lands.”

The AANES was first formed in 2014 in the Kurdish-majority regions of Afrin, Kobani and Jazira in northern Syria following the withdrawal of the government forces. Later, it was expanded to Manbij, Tabqa, Raqqa, Hasakah and Deir ez-Zor after the SDF defeated ISIS militarily there.

The AANES called on the guarantor states [the US and Russia] to assume their legal and moral responsibilities, bind Turkey to the ceasefire agreement of 2019, and to find a solution for the Syrian crisis.

This comes as Turkish attacks escalate against areas along the border strip in northeastern Syria.

Following the Turkish incursion in October 2019, Turkey signed two ceasefire agreements, one with Russia and the other with the US stipulating ceasing all hostilities and the withdrawal of the SDF 32 km away from the Turkish border.

The SDF did withdrew from the border areas according to the agreement, but Turkey continues targeting the area.
