Unknown gunmen kill, injure government forces’ soldiers in Syrian Desert
DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – Two soldiers of Syrian government forces was killed and three others were wounded, on Saturday in a machinegun attack targeted their post in the town of Sukhnah in Syrian Desert.
A military source of the government forces’ Division 17, who did not mention his name, told North Press that unidentified gunmen riding motorbikes cordoned two military posts of the Division and attacked them with machineguns. Clashes break out for less than a few minutes.
“Two government soldiers were killed and three were wounded as a result. The gunmen managed to escape to the desert, the source added.
The Syrian Desert covers nearly half of the area of Syria, and is distributed over the governorates of Deir ez-Zor, Raqqa, Aleppo, Homs, Hama, Rif Dimashq, Suwayda and Palmyra.
Iranian-backed militias control large areas of the Syrian Desert and the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, which constitutes a source of concern as it witnesses intensive operations by the Islamic State Organization (ISIS) sleeper cells.
On of this month, three members of SGF and an officer were killed and 9 were wounded when an IED exploded in their patrol in Deir ez-Zor southern desert
