SDF arrests 12 ISIS members planned to carry out attacks in NE Syria

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced on Tuesday the arrest of 12 of ISIS members. SDF also said it foiled a plan to get out ISIS families from Hawl Camp in northeast Syria.

The plan according to the SDF was to get the ISIS families out from Hawl camp and take them to areas controlled by Turkey and Turkish-backed opposition SANA factions.

The SDF media center said on its official website that with help of Internal Security Forces (Asayish), the SDF forces seized “a quantity of ammunition, weapons and military equipment. 12 members of ISIS sleeper cells, who were preparing to carry out attacks in NE Syria, were arrested.”

This comes at a time when Turkey threatens to launch a military operation in areas in northern Syria, including Tel Rifaat and Manbij.

On July 1, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Ankara’s new military operation in northern Syria could begin at any moment.

“I always say that we can start [the incursion] at any moment at night. We should not worry and rush, especially since we are working in the area,” Erdogan told reporters after returning from the NATO summit in Madrid.

The SDF attached its statement with a video clip of the campaign it launched. The video shows the arrested ISIS members with the seized weapons.

Hawl Camp, 45 km east of the city of Hasakah, is a house for 55.829 individuals, including 28.725 Iraqis, 18.850 Syrians and 8.254 of foreign nationalities, according to the latest statistics obtained by North Press.
