US, Iraq demand countries repatriate their nationals from Hawl Camp in NE Syria
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Qasim al-Araji, the National Security Adviser in Iraq, and Alina L. Romanowski, the new US ambassador to Baghdad, reiterated on Wednesday the need for countries to repatriate their nationals from Hawl Camp in northeast Syria.
During a meeting with Romanowski in Baghdad, al-Araji said that ISIS threat still exists, and the international community must remain united to confront this danger.
Al-Araji called on the US to pressure countries to repatriate their nationals from Hawl Camp.
The US ambassador said that her country should work to stabilize Iraq and then they together should cooperate to defeat terrorism, and what regards the return of Iraqis from Hawl Camp.
She said that the US is aware of the complexities the issue of repatriating the families of ISIS fighters, stressing the need for countries to repatriate nationals from the camp.
On Tuesday, The Iraqi Ministry of Migration and Displacement announced that the number of Iraqi families that recently left the camp has reached 603.
Hawl Camp, 45 km east of the city of Hasakah, houses 56,775 people, the majority of them are Iraqis. While thousands of wives and children of foreign ISIS members and detainees live in a special section within the camp. It also houses thousands of internally displaced Syrians.
