Sandstorm sends displaced in camp in Syria’s Raqqa to hospital

TABQA, Syria (North Press) – A sandstorm that hit part of Syria on Monday caused respiratory problems to the displaced people and material damage to IDPS Mahmoudli camp, north Tabqa, north Syria.

Mahmoudli is a formal internally displaced person (IDP) camp in Raqqa governorate which is run by the autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES).

Earlier this week, meteorologists warned of a sandstorm that would strike Syria, especially the eastern regions and the Badia.

“A number of the displaced persons’ tents was torn in the sandstorm. It also caused cases of suffocation,” Abdulhadi al-Abed, an administrative official in Mahmoudli camp, said.

“The displaced who had breath problems were taken to the medical point inside the camp to receive spray sessions. As for those with chronic cases, they were transported directly to the Tabqa National Hospital for treatment. They were discharged this morning after receiving treatment,” he added.

The administration of the camp has not been able so far to document the accurate number of tents that were torn. But they are working to know the right number so that they replace them as soon as possible, he  told North Press.

The official said that the previous sandstorm also caused damage to about150 tents, which were displace with new ones.

On May 7, North Press reported the death of five people, along with hundreds of cases of suffocation in Deir ez-Zor as a result of the sandstorm.
