EU says nuclear agreement with Iran ‘close’
QAMISHLI, Syria ()North Press) – Iran and world powers are “very close” to agreement on reviving their 2015 nuclear deal which would curb Tehran’s nuclear program in exchange for lifting tough sanctions, Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy said yesterday.
Iran has been engaged in negotiations to revive the accord formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with Britain, China, France, Germany and Russia directly, and the United States indirectly.
Parties have signaled for weeks that the negotiations are close to an agreement, but that “political decisions” are required from Tehran and Washington.
“We are very close but there are still some issues pending. I cannot tell you when or how, but it is a matter of days, ” Borrell told reporters on the sidelines of the Doha Forum in Qatar.
Iran confirmed that dropping its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) from a US terror blacklist was among the outstanding issues.
However, senior Iran’s Guards officials said that the deal should not be held up over the issue of sanctions against the Guards if the accord serves the interests of the people.
