Iraq arrest infiltrators of Syrian nationalities
ERBIL, KRG, Iraq (North Press) – Iraqi security authorities announced, on Tuesday, they managed to arrest 62 infiltrators of Syrian nationality.
“In continuation of its operations to monitor and secure the borders, the security forces were able to arrest 62 infiltrators of Syrian nationality between the border guards of the sixth region and the Peshmerga forces,” the Iraqi Security Media Cell said in a statement.
“All the necessary legal measures were taken against them,” the statement read.
The Syria-Iraq border periodically witnesses infiltration attempts by Iraqis and Syrians, according to Iraqi security data.
So far, the Iraqi security authorities have not released a formal toll about the number of arrested Syrians who crossed the borders since the eruption of the Syrian war, over ten years ago.
Law will determine fate of the arrested Syrian for crossing the border illegally, according to previous statement by Joint Operations Spokesperson to North Press.
Under Iraqi law, those who enter the country illegally are repatriated to their country after the court issues rulings against them with simple sentences that may not exceed one year prison, according to legal experts.
Iraq does not settle them in camps “because entering the country as individuals or in separated small groups differs from the mass exudes so that they cannot be settled in camps of Syria refugees in Iraq,” the legal expert, Tareq Harb, told North Press.
