Iran confirms five-year prison sentence against Kurdish language teacher

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Iran has confirmed the five-year prison sentence againstthe Kurdish language teacher Zahra Mohammadi and authorities demanded that she turns herself in to serve her sentence.

The prison sentence was confirmed after the Chief Justice of Iran’s northwestern Kurdistan province rejected Mohammadi’s lawyers’ appeal for her retrial.

In February of 2020, Mohammadi was sentenced to 10 years in prison on charges of “forming groups and societies with the aim of disrupting national security,” Then the sentence was dropped to five years.

Zahra Mohammadi is the director of the Nozhin Socio-Cultural Association and she teaches Kurdish language and Literature.

The civic organization has been holding Kurdish language classes in various cities in Kurdistan for the past few years, with the official permission of the Ministry of Interior, and it held campaigns for helping flood victims, helping people during the Corona pandemic.

In May of 2019, Mohammadi was arrested for six months under interrogation and she was released in the same year on a bail of 700 million Iranian Tomans (about 28,000 USD).
