400 persons stranded in KRG arrive in Syria’s northeast
DERIK, Syria (North Press) – About 400 people, who were stranded in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRG), arrived, on Thursday, to areas held by the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) through al-Walid border crossing with the KRG.
The stranded people in the KRG review the administration of the crossing in order to complete the exit procedures then they are transferred by a bus through al-Walid crossing to Semalka crossing where they complete the entry procedures, according to a person that entered to the AANES-held areas today morning.
The al-Suwaydiyah/al-Walid crossing between Syria and Iraq is supposed to be opened for employees of humanitarian organizations working in northeastern Syria tomorrow, Friday, a source from the crossing said.
Following clashes erupted on December 15, 2021, the KRG border authorities closed the Semalka-Faysh Khabur border crossing until further notice for all actors, including NGOs, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) announced.
Meanwhile, discussions are still continuing between the AANES and the KRG under US auspice in order to reopen the crossing, according to official statements.
