ISIS sleeper cell captured in Iraq’s Kirkuk
ERBIL, KRG, Iraq (North Press) – On Thursday, The Iraqi Ministry of Defense announced the arrest of a sleeper cell of the Islamic State Organization (ISIS) that was planning to break into Tasfirat building in Kirkuk province.
“In a qualitative operation and based on intelligence, Field Detachments from Kirkuk Intelligence and Security Directorate captured an ISIS sleeper cell of four agents , who were planning to break into Tasfirat building in Kirkuk province,” the Ministry of Defense said in a statement.
The building includes a prison where individuals charged of belonging to ISIS are detained.
The four arrested agents confessed that they conducted exploratory walkabouts to gather information in order to know the number of guard towers in the building. One of the arrestees provided ISIS with names of residents cooperating with the security forces.
“Another one secured fake documents for the ISIS agents to facilitate their move and hid from the security organs,” the statement read.
And one of the arrestees participated in a former terrorist operation against the security forces and Peshmerga Forces, according to the statement.
On December 6, the Ministry of Peshmerga in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRG) announced a new attack carried out by the ISIS in an area between Kirkuk and Erbil cities.
