Turkish gendarmeries torture a civilian to death in Syria’s Idlib

IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – On Monday, the Turkish border guards (gendarmeries) tortured to death one Syrian civilian trying to cross border illegally to Turkey.

The young man, Maher Ammar Berbesh, was killed while trying to cross to Turkey to work, local sources told North Press.

Due to the deteriorating living conditions, Berbesh, who hails from Ma’arat al-Nu’man city in Idlib southern countryside, tried to cross border and search for better job opportunities in Turkey, the sources added.

The Turkish gendarmeries beat him until he passed away.

Many Syrians try to cross the border illegally to Turkey amid absence of safe ways to reunite with their families or find a job opportunity in Turkey in bid for improving livelihood.

On December 7, the Turkish gendarmeries fired at a Syrian person trying to cross the border near Harem area.

Similarly, early November, two civilians were killed by Turkish border guards while trying to cross borders in north Idlib.

The number of those, who were killed by bullets of the Turkish gendarmeries since the eruption of the Syrian war, has reached 478 civilians including 87 minors, according to Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Civilians, who try to cross the Syrian-Turkish border in the countryside of Idlib and Aleppo, are usually severely beaten and tortured at the hands of the Turkish gendarmerie, and dozens of them have lost their lives so far.
