Northwest Syria witnesses more escalation between government and opposition

IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – On Monday, mutual bombing took place between Syrian government forces and Turkish-backed armed opposition factions in the de-escalation zone in northwestern country.

The Syrian government forces intensified bombing the opposition factions’ sites in the villages and towns of Fatterah, Kafr Oweid, Sfuhen, Kansafra, Fleifel, Maarbalit, Majdaliya, outskirts of al-Bara and Benin in the Zawiya Mountain area, south of Idlib, opposition military sources told North Press.

The sites of the opposition in the villages of Kafr Ta’al and Tedil, west of Aleppo, and al-Sirmaniyah, Khirbet al-Naqus and al-Enkawi in the Ghab Plain, west of Hama, were also bombed by the government, the sources added.

Meanwhile, the opposition factions responded to the governments’ bombing by shelling the latter’s sites in Kafr Battikh, al-Milaja and Dar al-Kabira south of Idlib, as well as the areas near Jub al-Ahmar, north of Latakia, and the Regiment 46 west of Aleppo, according to the same sources.

For months, areas in Syria’s northwest have been witnessing mutual shelling between parties to the conflict in different areas amid news on government military reinforcements to different areas in the region.

Although the de-escalation zone in northwest Syria is subject to a Russian-Turkish ceasefire agreement signed in March 2020, the area witnesses frequent mutual bombardment despite the entry of the ceasefire into force.
