Again, Syrian refugees protest in front of UNHCR in north Iraq’s Erbil

ERBIL, KRG, Iraq (North Press) – On Saturday, dozens of Syrian refugees protested in front of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Erbil, the capital of Kurdistan Region of Iraq, calling the UN to resettle them in a third country or to ensure their basic rights in their current place of asylum.

The protestors expressed desire to be repatriated to Syria or to resettle them in another country as they live in difficult situations in Kurdistan.

The protests are to demand a better education and health care system for the Syrians and to grant them the Iraqi citizenship.

Education, medical services should be provided to the Syrian refugees and children, especially those who have got no official documents form the Syrian state, protesters said.

They even called the UNHCR to ferry them to a third country instead of staying in a country which grants no citizenship to refugees.

In October and November, similar protests took place in Erbil with the same demands.

Approximately, 250,000 Syrian refugees live in Kurdistan Region of Iraq, media reports said.
