Leishmaniasis infections increase in Syria’s south of Hasakah
SHADDADI, Syria (North Press) – Recently, the number of leishmaniasis infections has greatly increased in the city of Shaddadi, south of Hasakah, northeast Syria.
“This year the leishmaniasis infections have increased and it is known as Aleppo acne,” Ali Sa’id, an administrator at Shaddadi medical center, said on Tuesday.
The infections have merged three months ago, but in few numbers and over the last two weeks they have increased, Sa’id told North Press.
“We receive more than 100 infections on a daily basis,” Sa’id added.
“Leishmaniasis spreads by the bite of phlebotomine sand flies. People got infected in summer and they show the symptoms during winter,” he noted.
According to Sa’id, patients visit Shaddadi center on Sundays and Wednesdays for treatment which is offered for free.
