Russian jets target opposition’s posts in Syria’s south Idlib

IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – On Monday, Russian warplanes bombarded posts of the Turkish-backed armed factions south of Idlib, northwest Syria.

The Russian warplanes targeted the fortifications of the factions on the outskirts of al-Bara town in Zawiya Mountain, in the southern countryside of Idlib, with vacuum missiles and several airstrikes, military sources of the opposition told North Press.

The shelling wounded of a person, said to be a civilian, caused damage to the surrounding forests and lands, uprooted some trees, and partially destroyed houses, according to the same sources.

The Russian airstrikes coincided with artillery shelling by the government forces from the city of Kafr nabl targeting the gatherings of the factions in the towns of al-Bara, Kansafra, Kafr Aweid and Maarblit, south of Idlib, the sources added.

Similar heavy artillery shelling targeted opposition factions’ positions in  the towns of al-Ziyara, Enkawi and Sirmaniyah, in the western countryside of Hama, amid intensive flight by Russian drones over the area.

on Sunday, the areas south of Idlib witnessed a military escalation and mutual shelling between government forces and opposition factions.

For months, areas in Syria’s northwest have been witnessing mutual shelling between parties to the conflict in different areas amid news on government military reinforcements to different areas in the region.

Although the de-escalation zone in northwest Syria is subject to a Russian-Turkish ceasefire agreement signed in March 2020, the area witnesses frequent mutual bombardment despite the entry of the ceasefire into force.
