KRG, UN warn against revival of ISIS in Iraq

ERBIL, KRG, Iraq (North Press) – On Friday, President and the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRG) and the United Nations mission in Iraq called for more coordination and cooperation to counter the Islamic State Organization (ISIS).

This followed the attack that ISIS carried out yesterday in Makhmour District killing a number of civilians and Peshmerga forces.

The KRG President, Nechirvan Barzani, strongly condemned the “brutal” attack by ISIS militants on the Qarachogh areas in Makhmour district.

The KRG president stressed, in a statement, that the daily attacks by ISIS “require a firm and urgent response and strict defensive and military measures by Iraq and the KRG to put an end to crimes and terrorist operations.”

He noted to the urgent need to review the military situation and capabilities, in addition to the need to “take accelerating and immediate steps to achieve more effective coordination between the Iraqi army and the Peshmerga, with the participation and support of the US-led Global Coalition, to ensure filling the security and military gaps, especially those between the Peshmerga sites and the Iraqi forces.”

“ISIS will take advantage of the situation in favor of its interest if the political process does not follow the rightful course, and if security and stability are not achieved in the country,” Barzani warned.

Meanwhile, he called for “overcoming the political disputes, working to defeat terrorism, and achieve safety and stability.”

Therefore, he called for a strong coordination between the Peshmerga forces and the Iraqi Army and the US-led Global Coalition, as soon as possible, to take the required measures to curb the ISIS revival.

Barzani stressed his government’s readiness for any coordination and cooperation to fight terrorism and achieve stability in Iraq in general and particularly in areas that are being attacked by ISIS.

In a statement released on its official website, the UN mission in Iraq offered its condolences to the victims’ families and wished recovery to the wounded.

The mission called for “strengthening security coordination and cooperation in the ongoing fight against terrorism.”
