Any Turkish aggression on NE Syria is ISIS’s opportunity: Kurdish top official
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Any possible Turkish aggression on Syrian territory will be a precious opportunity for the Islamic State organization (ISIS) to reorganize itself and launch terrorist operations around the world, Badran Jia Kurd, deputy co-presidency of the Autonomous Administration of North East Syria (AANES) said on Thursday.
After about a month of threats, Ankara suspended the military operation against the areas of northeastern Syria, according to media close to Turkey.
In an exclusive interview with North Press, Jia Kurd stated, “the Turkish threat still exists, and the Turkish government declares an attack on northeastern Syria on a daily basis. This means that the Turkish threat is a strategic one against our regions.”
Early in November, speaking of a military operation against northeast Syria, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said “It will be carried out when it is a must,” adding “it cannot be undone.”
Observers believe that the failure to launch the process so far is due to the continued Russian and American refusal and the absence of any consensus in this regard.
The top official of the AANES described Turkey’s failure to obtain a green light from Washington and Moscow as a positive attitude.
“But Turkey is attacking through drones and targeting civilians. The ceasefire includes drones and the closure of the airspace in front of Turkey, and this is what is required now,” he added.
Turkey launched a series of drone attacks targeting civilian cars in several areas in northeast Syria, causing deaths and injuries.
The Turkish forces control about 10% of the Syrian territory, amid accusations of attempts to Turkify these areas, as they impose education in the Turkish language and trade in Turkish lira, according to media and human rights reports.
Badran Jia Kurd put the great responsibility on the shoulders of the United States and Russia, which signed two ceasefire agreements with Ankara in 2019, “and there must be a decisive stance on their part.”
“Ankara’s threats come at a critical stage for Turkey, as it suffers from internal political, economic and security problems.”
The Turkish lira is currently suffering from an unprecedented collapse, as the value of one US dollar has exceeded more than ten Turkish liras.
“The beginning of the political solution in Syria requires the end of the Turkish occupation, and the withdrawal of Turkish forces and the Turkish-backed armed Syrian opposition factions from Syrian territory,” Jia Kurd stressed.
He believed that a political solution in Syria still requires hard work and efforts, in addition to international support.
Jia Kurd believes that the Arab countries should play a role in this direction, as they have not played an effective role so far, leaving the Syrian arena to other regional powers to obstruct the political solution and play a negative role.
