Iran-backed militias evacuate positions in eastern Syria
DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – Yesterday on Saturday, Iran-backed militias left several of their military positions in the town of al-Bukamal and its countryside on the Syrian-Iraqi border in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) evacuated the eastern section of the Imam Ali base, which includes members of Liwa Fatemiyoun, in addition to a military point of Liwa al-Quds near the green belt area in al-Bukamal countryside, a source of the Iranian-backed Liwa al-Quds said.
Liwa Abu al-Fadl al-Abbas, also known as the al-Abbas Brigade also moved more than 40 fighters from its base in the town of al-Mayadin, east of Deir ez-Zor, to the railway area on the Iraqi side, “all of whom are of non-Syrian nationalities,” according to the same source.
Conditioning anonymity, the source told North Press that the IRGC kept equipment and some members of Syrian nationality in the positions to protect them.
The Iranian-backed militias control the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor. They have established two bases in al-Bukamal and al-Mayadin, both called the Imam Ali bases, the largest of Iran outside its borders, in addition to several military headquarters belonging to the IRGC.
The source of Liwa al-Quds stated that a secret meeting of the Iranian leaders was held a few days ago at the Imam Ali base, without telling the members the reason for the meeting or even its outcomes.
The reason behind the evacuation is still unknown, according to the source, who ruled out what was reported by some media that it was because of the drones that may target those positions.
He defended his opinion by saying that important headquarters that include prominent leaders have not yet been evacuated, “and that the warplanes target headquarters in both the Syrian and Iraqi territories, and there is no point in moving them from here to there if the purpose is to protect them from being targeted.”
