Autonomous Administration sounds alarm about Coronavirus

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Thursday, the Health Board of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) made a “final appeal to the concerned countries to intervene and cooperate in confronting coronavirus, as the region is on the verge of a humanitarian catastrophe.”

“The Autonomous Administration is no longer able to handle the virus alone if the situation continues like this,” Mustafa said.

“The situation in the health centers is frightening, as they are close to full, and the situation does not get better. Rather, it signals a humanitarian catastrophe,” he added.

Mustafa’s statements came during a press conference held in the city of Qamishli, northeast Syria, in which he showed the statistics related to the spread of the virus in the area.

Mustafa indicated that “their medical teams have conducted 72,360 swabs so far, of which 27,845 were positive.”

He pointed out that they have not received sufficient support from any side, except for some aid from “our international partners, but it did not rise to the level of confronting the virus.”

The AANES official described the statistics of September as “terrifying”, as they included 14,450 swabs, of which 7,183 were positive, and 138 deaths during the same month.

The co-chair of the Health Board stated that “there is a lack of oxygen in the health centers.”

He also believed that if the situation continues like this, “no one can be received in the health centers and the situation will get out of control.”

Mustafa called on the residents of northeast Syria to abide by the preventative measures, “because the Health Board is not able to deal with the virus alone.”
