Port police arrest dozens of Syrians while fleeing country in Latakia
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – On Wednesday, the port police in the city of Jableh on the Syrian coast arrested dozens of Syrians who were preparing to sail out of the country illegally.
“Dozens of people gathered near the port of Jableh, which caught the attention of the police, who arrested about 47 people,” an informed local source in Jableh told North Press.
The source quoted people close to the arrested saying that the authorities would release them once their security files are checked.
Although more than ten years have passed since the start of the Syrian war, the deteriorating living and security conditions in the country are pushing Syrians to emigrate.
In mid-September, the United Nations Commission of Inquiry on Syria said that the escalation of violence and fighting is worsening the crisis in Syria, making it unsafe for the return of refugees, adding that the parties to the conflict continue to perpetrate war crimes and crimes against humanity and infringing the basic human rights of Syrians.
Further, the report said that the Syrian economy has been rapidly deteriorating, causing bread prices to soar and a striking more than 50% increase in food insecurity compared with last year.
