Government forces, opposition factions exchange shelling in Syria’s northwest
IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – On Sunday evening, the countryside of Idlib and Hama, northwest Syria, witnessed a continuation of reciprocal shelling between Turkish-backed opposition factions and Syrian government forces, causing material damage to civilians’ houses.
The government forces stationed in the town of Kafranbel renewed their artillery and missile shelling on the towns of Kansafra, Sfuhun, Kafr Oweid and al-Bara in the Zawiya Mountain area, south of Idlib, opposition sources told North Press.
The bombing resulted in the destruction of citizens’ properties, without reports of human losses, the sources added.
The government artillery bombardment targeted the opposition factions’ positions near the towns of al-Enkawi and al-Mashik in the Ghab Plain area in the western countryside of Hama, according to the same sources.
Earlier today, Russian warplanes targeted the vicinity of the towns of al-Bara and Kansafra with high-explosive missiles.
Responding to the government forces’ bombing, the al-Fateh al-Mubin Operations Room, which includes several factions, announced that it had targeted the Byout Hassano area in the Ghab Plain.
It also targeted the government forces’ points near Hir Dirkil and al-Bawabiya, west of Aleppo, with mortars and artillery shells.
Despite the entry into force of the ceasefire agreement signed between Russia and Turkey in March 2020, the de-escalation zone in northwest Syria is witnessing a military escalation and mutual shelling between government forces and opposition factions.
Recently, Turkish and Russian media has circulated news about an upcoming meeting between the Turkish and Russian presidents, where Idlib will be its main agenda.
