People of Idlib protest Turkey’s silence on Russian, Syrian escalations

IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – On Thursday, several villages and towns in the Zawiya Mountain area, south of Idlib, northwest Syria, witnessed angry protests denouncing the silence of Turkish forces over the recent military escalation of Russia and the Syrian government forces in southern Idlib, which led to the killing and wounding of dozens.

Hundreds of residents of villages and towns protested in front of the Turkish points in Zawiya Mountain area, blocking the roads leading to them with stones and burning tires, local sources from the area told North Press.

The protesters surrounded more than 11 Turkish military points there, according to the sources.

The protesters expressed their anger at the continued bombardment by government forces and Russia of the area, which resulted in the killing of seven people who were said to be civilians this morning.

Activists on social networking sites launched the hashtag “Zawiya Mountain is destroyed” on the Facebook and Twitter applications.

“The state of anger, protests and burning tires should not be limited to Zawiya Mountain area only. Rather, it should include all areas and develop into a state of civil disobedience in various regions,” wrote journalist Fayez al-Dugheim on Facebook.

However, the journalist Zain al-Rifai’ said: “The bombing will never stop in Idlib’s countryside because no party fears the guarantor (Turkey), and even the factions do not care about the people having them.”

“The people of the region are a test field for Russian weapons, and the purpose of the presence of these people is to shed their blood only,” he added.
