AANES: The elections will come after the completion of drafting the social contract

RAQQA, Syria (North Press) – Farid Atti, co-chair of the Executive Council of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), said that the issue of holding elections in north and east Syria will be discussed after the completion of the drafting of the social contract.

He added to North Press that the new social contract will be approved either by a general popular referendum or by vote in the Executive Council of Autonomous Administration.

A few days ago, the General Council of the Autonomous Administration set the structure of a committee to renew the social contract in force in the areas administered by the Autonomous Administration.

Atti pointed out that the new social contract will determine the form and structure of the administration, and will include the Executive and Legislative Council, the Supreme Administrative Court and the Electoral Commission.

The social contract is akin to the AANES’ constitution, and as defined by the AANES, is a set of theoretical and practical foundations, laws and organizational rules established to determine the relationship between the administration and the people, and to clarify the rights and duties of individuals and officials within society.

On Saturday, the Presidency of the Executive Council of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria began preparing for local elections for the current year 2021.

The Presidency met with former members of the Electoral Commission in the regions of Jazira and the Euphrates.

The meeting came with the aim of benefiting from the experience of these members to establish a new electoral commission and prepare for holding comprehensive local elections in the AANES areas.
