Mass grave discovered in Syrian Desert

PALMYRA, Syria (North Press) – On Saturday, Syrian government forces found, during a combing operation in the vicinity of the town of al-Amriyah in the Syrian Desert (Badia), a mass grave dating back to the period of the control of ISIS over the region.

This is considered the seventh grave to be found in the Syrian Badia.

It included the bodies of civilians and military personnel who were killed by ISIS during its complete control of the region during the past three years.

The Syrian government forces imposed a security cordon around the area of the mass grave in the northern part of al-Amriyah in the middle of the Syrian Desert this morning.

Sayid al-Ahmed, member of disabling mines told North Press that the operation came by accident during working on disabling land mines from the region to establish a checkpoint and a detachment of the government.

“The reinforcements arrived at once form the towns of al-Sukhna and Palmyra to the site and imposed a security cordon to avoid approaching until the forensic medicine team and the civil defense arrived to work on body removal and identifying them,” he added.

“The grave holds between 15 and 20 bodies expected to be members of the government forces who were killed by ISIS and buried in this region, according to the officers responsible,” he pointed out.
