Fire destroys wheat and barley crops in Syria’s Suwayda
SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – On Tuesday evening, fires broke out in lands grown with wheat and barley, estimated at tens of acres, west of the city of Suwayda, south Syria, without knowing the true causes of the fires.
This is the first incident since the harvest season began, without knowing the cause of the fires, amid local residents’ accusations that it was intended, without specifying the identity of the perpetrator.
Ahmad al-Awwad, 55, a pseudonym for a farmer whose agricultural lands were burned, told North Press that dozens of acres of wheat and barley were completely burned east of al-Aslaha town, west of Suwayda.
The farmer added that the fire destroyed about fifteen acres of my land grown with wheat, and about fifteen acres of barley and wheat for other farmers.
Sameh al-Ali, 44, a pseudonym for a member of the Civil Fire Brigade in Suwayda, told North Press that they managed to put out the fire in about an hour, in cooperation with farmers and local residents.
The firefighter estimated the area of the burnt land at about 25 acres, pointing out that the cause of the fire was not clear.
