SDF launches security operation in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor

HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – On Sunday, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) launched a security operation in  Wadi al-Ajij area in the northern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, in search of ISIS cells, with the support of the Global Coalition.

A military source told North Press that the operation began with air and ground support by the Coalition, to search for ISIS cells and weapons caches, adding that the operation will last for four days.

The operation came after an increase in the activity of ISIS cells and leaders in the border region with Iraq, and to uncover weapons smuggling routes, according to the source.

During the first hours of the operation, Coalition forces carried out several missile strikes targeting several locations in the region, amid intensive over flights of reconnaissance aircraft to monitor any movements in them.

Local sources from the area told North Press that the SDF moved in the past hours, and helicopters of the Global Coalition launched illuminating mortars in the sky of the area.

The source considered that the operation comes within the ongoing and joint efforts between the SDF and the Global Coalition to prevent the extremist organization “from causing chaos and threatening peace and security in the region, and carrying out their activities.”
