Syria’s AANES adopts new system of electricity rationing due to Turkey’s water retention

KOBANI, Syria (North Press) – On Wednesday, the Energy Board of the Euphrates region of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), announced that a new system of electricity rationing will be adopted in Kobani, as Turkey continues to cut off water coming to Syria.

Turkey has been holding the water of the Euphrates River to Syria since mid-February.

The electricity will be cut off in Kobani from 12 am to 4 pm, said the co-chair of the Energy Board of the Euphrates region, Nesrin Kana’an.

Kobani used to have power from 4 pm to 4 am.

Kana’an linked the new rationing system to “Turkey’s ongoing policy of cutting off water of the Euphrates River.”

The water levels in both Tishrin and Tabqa Dams have fallen below their levels due to the continuous flow of water in quantities of less than 200 cubic meters per second and the depletion of water reserves in the lakes, according to Kana’an.

Kana’an indicated that it is possible for the electricity operating hours in Kobani to decrease if Turkey continues to seize water flowing to the Euphrates.

According to the agreement signed between Damascus and Ankara regarding the Euphrates River, “Syria’s share of water coming from Turkey is 500 cubic meters per second, and now only less than 200 cubic meters of it reaches,” according to administrative officials at Tishrin Dam.
